History
In the past, the Nagarathar community benefited from the wisdom of knowledgeable elders in our hometown, who played a crucial role in suggesting suitable matches for boys and girls. Marriage and religious functions served as important platforms where eligible grooms and brides could connect and form meaningful alliances. However, with the community's dispersion worldwide due to employment and occupation, a significant challenge has emerged: the lack of access to essential knowledge and information of prospective brides and grooms. This valuable aspect, which was once fulfilled by the community's close-knit environment, needed to be bridged
Nagarathar Thirumana Sevai Maiyam
In response to these changing circumstances, Mr. M. Chidambaram Chettiar, a retired Indian Bank officer from Devakottai, took the initiative to establish Nagarathar Thirumana Sevai Maiyam, a Matrimonial Service, at his residence in Besant Nagar, Chennai. The primary aim of this service was to bridge the information gap caused by the community's dispersion, facilitating the exchange of information between prospective brides and grooms.
Growth & Expansion
Having successfully pioneered the service for over a decade, Mr. M. Chidambaram Chettiar decided to entrust the responsibility to someone who shared his vision. In 2001, he chose Mr. SM. Lakshmanen Chettiar (Somle) of Devakottai, a retired Officer of Indian Bank, to take over the service starting from January 2002. The transition was communicated to all registered grooms and brides through letters.
On January 24, 2002, the service commenced its operations at the residence of SM Lakshmanen Chettiar in Indian Bank Colony. Initially, the service was available every 3-4 weeks on Sundays, following its previous schedule of nearly daily service in Besant Nagar. The overwhelming response received from the community emphasized the significant need for such a service, thus necessitating the scaling of operations, relocation to a more suitable space, and other improvements.
With the divine blessings of Lord Bala Thandayuthapani of Palani, Mr. SP. Lakshmanan from Devakottai, a trustee of Kovilur Madam, recognized the space constraints encountered by the service. He sought and obtained permission and blessings from Kovilur Aatheena Karththar SEER VALAR SEER NACHAPPA ADIGAL to conduct the Nagarathar Matrimonial Service at the premises of the Koviloor Madam in West Mambalam, Chennai.
With the dedicated space, the service expanded to include a community of volunteers and implemented computerization to support scalable operations. Telephonic support, regular meet-ups, and events further increased accessibility and reach.
In response to the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic, the service gracefully embraced technology and transitioned to an online platform while staying true to its original ethos, vision, and purpose. The service is now globally accessible 24x7 and continues to be free, maintaining the commitment as it was established decades ago. The platform and processes are being continuously enhanced to improve the user experience and services
With a rich legacy spanning over three decades, Nagarathar Thirumana Sevai Maiyam stands as a testament to its earliest roots and long-standing commitment. Throughout its journey, the service has successfully enabled the unions of thousands of Nagarathar brides and grooms
